Transforming an Outdoor Landing with Brick and Concrete
I recently completed a project for a homeowner who wanted to upgrade the landing area at the base of their outdoor stairs. The goal was to create a more stable, visually appealing space that would complement the existing brick stairs and enhance the overall functionality of the entryway. As a stone mason, I was eager to combine my expertise in brickwork and concrete to deliver a durable and polished result.
The Challenge
The existing landing, as seen in the “before” image, was uneven and worn, with a cracked concrete surface that posed a tripping hazard. The area needed to be leveled and reinforced while maintaining a cohesive look with the brick stairs leading up to the house. Additionally, the space was tight, bordered by a fence and the house’s exterior wall, which required precise measurements and careful execution to ensure a seamless fit.

My Approach
I began by consulting with the client to understand their needs and ensure the design would align with the aesthetic of their home. My plan was to remove the old, damaged concrete and create a new landing with a sturdy concrete base, framed by brick edging to match the stairs. I focused on maintaining a clean workspace throughout the project, a practice I take pride in, to minimize disruption for the homeowner. Precision was key in this project, as the landing needed to be perfectly level to ensure safety and longevity.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The transformation is evident in the before-and-after images. The “before” photo shows a cracked, uneven concrete landing with visible wear, casting shadows from the uneven surface and scattered debris. In contrast, the “after” image reveals a freshly poured concrete landing, smooth and level, framed by a neat border of red bricks that seamlessly tie into the existing stairs. The clean lines and professional finish not only improved the safety of the space but also elevated the entryway’s appearance, making it a welcoming feature of the home.
